Liberal Democrat Councillor for Hartley Wintney, Eversley and Yateley Learn more

Honour the Covenant

by David Simpson on 25 September, 2009

Two years after highlighting the problems with our Government not honouring the  Military Covenant the Liberal Democrat Conference once again called for the Covenant with those defending this country to be honoured.

From the NE of Hampshire I was joined by other councillors equally incensed at the way flagrant abuse of the British Forces by a cynical Labour Government. Fellow County Councillor Adrian Collett along with Hart Councillor Graham Cockarill and Yateley Town Councillor Roger Newman listened with myself and others from Hart and Rushmoor as the present Government was again called to public account.

This is what I said two years ago on 28th Sept 2007. Since then some things have improved but it has mainly been tinkering at the edges as we see with yet another General resigning.

28th Sept 2007

Brilliant result at Hampshire County Council. I proposed that HCC support the Royal British Legion campaign to Honour the Military Covenant. The Council supported the motion unanimously.

Now we can put further pressure on HM Government to ensure windows in families accommodation can be opened without fear of the frames falling out.

Pressure to supply the right equipment at the right time in the right place.

Hampshire has a proud military history with the country’s premier naval port in Portsmouth. The Home of the British army in Aldershot and the home of the RAF Chinooks at Odiham. Plus many other bases dotted around. It is right that we support these men and women who are doing their duty yet are so often let down by their country.
