Roads and Snow 2nd Dec

by David Simpson on 2 December, 2010

A morning update on the weather situation on the road network.

There has been widespread snowfall across the network so far, varying in intensity. South of the County seems to be worse with up to 15cm of snowfall and the north receiving  north about 7-8cm.

HCC and Amey staff have been working continuously throughout the night battling to keep the main road network open, Amey have mobilised all remaining operatives who have unused driving hours and any spare kit has also been mobilised.

P1 routes have been treated with salt four times since 6pm yesterday evening. Ploughing during the night only had a short term effect in some areas due to the intensity of the snowfall. P1’s will therefore need to run continuously until the main road network is deemed to be secure. Main roads are still generally passable, albeit with extreme care – The lack of traffic overnight means that there are many stretches of priority one roads with snow laying on the surface. However, but the black surface of the road is more evident in towns. As the morning traffic uses the roads the situation will improve.

Main problem areas are –
A325, A339, B3006 and B3004 due to snow and a lorry stuck on the A323 at Sleaford

Off the main road network the priority two and minor roads are in a poor condition and much disruption is bound to occur as people try to journey to work this morning. Great caution should be taken on these roads and journeys should only be done if absolutely necessary.

We have Farmers are out ploughing and mini-spreaders are being utilised where necessary with the Community Routes being run at 0600 hrs.

There have been major problems on the motorway and trunk road network overnight.  Most of their routes have suffered with heavy snowfall and freezing surfaces and we have received reports of multiple RTA’s across their Hampshire routes. The M3, A3 M27 and further afield the  M25 have all been affected by snow and incidents.

Further updates will follow.
